It gets a little confusing on the James Baileys. There is James A. which is also reported as James L., or simply, Jim. On his death certificate it names his father as Wyatt, born in Tennessee. Jim married Perniece Caroline "Aunt Priest" Gatlin on June 20th 1861 in Montgomery County Texas.

They had a son named Manny James Bailey. (He is called James Manning, or Manny James, my guess is Manning James “Manny” Bailey), who married Mollie Lee Strickland (sometimes called Strickling), on July 27th 1886 in Gonzales, Texas.

James M. Bailey and Mollie had these children:

  1. Luther Otho Bailey
  2. Lillie M. Bailey
  3. Vaness Vernon Bailey
  4. Ernest Manning Bailey
  5. Claudie Ora
  6. Timmy Bailey
  7. Myrtle

Claudie is our direct ancestor; she was born on December 19th, 1895 and married Odo K. Kiser on December 19th, 1916 in Monthalia, Texas. On June 19th, 1920 Claudie gave birth to Doris Marie Kiser, their only child.

James M. Bailey died on February 3rd, 1926 in Bebe, Texas

Odo K. Kiser died on March 6th, 1953, in Bebe, Texas

Claudie died on May 2nd, 1960, in San Antonio, Texas. She is buried at Leesville cemetery in Leesville, Texas. She is not listed on cemetery interments due to a stone that might be missing, but she is burried next to Odo. Through Riebe Funeral Home in Gonzales, Texas. Her Death certificate states it was as a result of breast cancer metastasizing.

My guess would be that Manning is a family name from James A.Bailey’s parents, maybe his mother’s maiden name, or father’s name.

I remember stories from my mother, Jeri Cover, about being raised by Claudie. They had turkies and Claudie would send Mom out to get them when it rained so they wouldn’t drown. Mom remembers the uses of a willow switch...and a bull that was not particularly nice. I remember a story regaurding Odo using a shotgun, and injuring his thumb.

Mom had no fond memories of Myrtle, quite the contrary.

Bailey Name Meaning and History

  1. status name for a steward or official, Middle English bail(l)i (Old French baillis, from Late Latin baiulivus, an adjectival derivative of baiulus ‘attendant’, ‘carrier’ ‘porter’).
  2. topographic name for someone who lived by the outer wall of a castle, Middle English bail(l)y, baile ‘outer courtyard of a castle’, from Old French bail(le) ‘enclosure’, a derivative of bailer ‘to enclose’, a word of unknown origin. This term became a place name in its own right, denoting a district beside a fortification or wall, as in the case of the Old Bailey in London, which formed part of the early medieval outer wall of the city.
  3. habitational name from Bailey in Lancashire, named with Old English beg ‘berry’ + leah ‘woodland clearing’.
  4. Anglicized form of French Bailly.

 Bailey Family

This site is dedicated to the future of our family, and to the memories that will not survive if left to our feeble and delicate human minds. There is information here from many sources, some more reliable than others. Where possible, I give sources, I take care to not assume everything is fact, therefore if I put it here, there was a great preponderance of evidence, or more than 2 or 3 collaberating resources. Please if you find mistakes, or have additional information, contact us.
